How many mega pixels is standard for a general camera?

Question by Fortune Cookie: How many mega pixels is standard for a general camera?
I am looking for a new camera and i am considering the Nikon Coolpix S400, which is a 12 megapixel camera. I need my camera to be quality and take really good pictures but I do not need a professional camera. It also had a 4x zoom so does that factor in at all?

12 is real good.. i think most are 5-10 with pretty good pics
