Orion Adventures in Astrophotography Bundle Reviews

Orion Adventures in Astrophotography Bundle

Orion Adventures in Astrophotography Bundle
  • Everything you need to take very wide-field astrophotos of the night sky with your own camera (camera not included)
  • A great way to get started in the rewarding hobby of astrophotography without breaking the bank
  • Capture stunning ethereal photos of our own galaxy - the cloudy Milky Way - by mounting your own camera onto the included EQ-1 equatorial mount equipped with a motor drive and 1/4"-20 threaded post
  • Take interesting star-trail photos and impress your friends and family
  • An amazing value - this affordable beginner astrophotography package lets you save big compared to purchasing each included item separately

Perhaps you're interested in a hobby of astrophotography, but you are overwhelmed by all the different equipment options. Well you're in luck! Orion has exactly what you're looking for in our Adventures in Astrophotography Bundle. You don't need a lot of fancy gear to start taking shots of the night sky. With just a few key pieces of astronomy equipment, you can capture beautiful wide-field images of starry skies. The Orion Adventures in Astrophotography Bundle lets you take surprisingly detailed pictures of star fields, the Milky Way, or star-trails with a point-and-shoot or DSLR camera (camera not included). All you have to do is attach your camera to the Orion EQ-1 Equatorial mount and tripod with the included 1/4"-20 threaded adapter, align the EQ mount with Polaris (the North star) and start shooting! If you leave the camera shutter open for an extended exposure, you'll be rewarded with stunning star-trail images. If you'd rather capture wide-field shots of starry skies and the Milky Way, you can add electronic tracking to the equation with the included EQ-1M electronic motor drive. The motor drive will slowly rotate your attached camera at the same rate the Earth rotates, so the stars in your image will be points of light instead of curvilinear star-trails.

All glass, fully coated optics reveal the depths of our solar system and the wonders of the Universe. Fully adjustable Tripod features a convenient accessory tray. Easy to use computerized hand control allows user to locate objects at the touch of a buttonCelestron 76LCM Computerized Telescope
The Celestron 76LCM is one of Celestron's most affordable computerized telescopes. For a modest price you get a complete telescope system with classic reflector style optics that deliver very good views of the Moon and planets. The complete package includes everything but the batteries; there are high and low power eyepieces, a red-dot finder, and a computerized Alt-Azimuth mount with a database of more than 4000 objects. The fully illustrated quick set-up guide makes the telescope easy to assemble and easy to use, and the package even includes astronomy software for your home computer.

The classic Newtonian design of Celestron's 76LCM telescope delivers very good views of the Moon and planets. The 25mm eyepiece magnifies the image 28X, just right for viewing deep space objects. When I look at M45 at low power, the so-called Seven Sisters turns into a cluster of dozens of stars filling the eyepiece with tiny beads of light. With the 9mm eyepiece (78X magnification) the 76LCM gives me very satisfying views of Saturn's rings and Jupiter's cloud bands. And with an optional 4mm plossl eyepiece (175X magnification) and careful focusing, Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon seem almost three dimensional.

The 76LCM telescope also features Celestron's patented SkyAlign technology. With SkyAlign I don't need a star chart or a compass to align the telescope, I just enter the date and time then point the telescope at three bright stars. SkyAlign tells me the star names, and allows the telescope to find over 4,000 stars, planets, and galaxies by just pushing a button. The "Two-Star Align" and "Solar System Align" modes are even quicker and easier to use. When I just want a quick look at the Moon or a planet, I like to set the telescope on the deck and use "Solar System Align" to begin viewing.

A student or family that wants to try astronomy will find the Celestron 76LCM just the right size because it delivers very good views of the Moon and planets and because the whole thirteen pound system can be carried outside in one trip and be ready to go in minutes. A computerized telescope may take practice to set up; if I don't enter the time correctly the alignment may fail for example. The other drawback of a computerized telescope is the short life of standard AA batteries. An optional AC adapter is a handy way to power the Celestron 76LCM, and I like to observe while seated because this gives me a solid and comfortable view. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Complete system is light, portable, and affordable
  • Classic Newtonian design for crisp, clear views
  • Easy computerized tracking of stars, planets, and galaxies
Cons:
  • Terrestrial images are upside-down
  • AA batteries only last a few hours

Our largest reflector optimized for astro-imaging boasts 10-inch parabolic primary optics with a very fast f/3.9 focal ratio for exceptional wide-field, deep-space imaging performance. Even faint galaxies and nebulas exhibit stunning detail with limited exposure time when photographed through this large-aperture astrograph with a CCD imager or DSLR camera. You'll get incredibly bright, crisp images that will make apo refractor aficionados green with envy - and you'll have more green in your wallet thanks to this telescope's more-affordable Newtonian design. Both the 10-inch (254mm) primary and secondary mirror feature enhanced reflectivity (94%) aluminization for bright, contrast-rich images. The 82mm minor axis secondary mirror provides excellent full-field illumination with modern CCD imagers and DSLR cameras, with less than 8% light drop-off at the edge of APS-C sized sensors. The adjustable 4-vane secondary mirror holder features very thin, 1mm thick spider vanes to minimize diffraction effects in images. A center mark on the primary mirror and three easy-grip collimation knobs make optical alignment easy and precise. Extended tube length of 7.5-inches in front of the focuser blocks intrusion of off-axis light, ensuring optimum image contrast.

Linear F.O.V. is 48' 5x24 mm finderscope; Includes aluminum tripod. Order yours today! Celestron PowerSeeker 114EQ 45X-225X Reflector Telescope I love bargains, so I was eager to try out Celestron's new Powerseeker 114 Newtonian reflector telescope. With its 4.5-inch mirror, Celestron's Powerseeker 114 gathers three times more starlight than popular 60mm refractors. The Powerseeker package includes two eyepieces (K20 and SR4), a plastic 3x barlow, and a lightweight equatorial mount.

Optically, the Powerseeker 114 holds its own when compared with my Celestron Firstscope 114EQ. Using the K20 eyepiece included as standard equipment, about 45x magnification, it's easy to see the Andromeda Galaxy and its smaller satellite galaxy M32. When compared to 60mm refractors, the Powerseeker 114 brings out much more detail in the Orion Nebula, reveals many more stars in Perseus' Double Cluster and even brings out a few individual stars in globular clusters like M13. Saturn looks quite small at 45x with the K20 eyepiece, but using my own 7.5mm eyepiece (120x) I can easily detect the shadow cast by the planet on the rings, and even glimpse the ring's Cassini Division. When the mirrors are properly lined up or "collimated," the images are reasonably sharp up to magnifications of 225x. I find a collimation tool helps get this fine tuning just right.

As good as the optics are, however, the effect of cost-cutting shows up in the mechanical components. The focuser is plastic, the finder scope is plastic, the rings that attach the telescope to the tripod are plastic. Even when the tripod legs are clamped at their shortest setting, the telescope wobbles when I try to focus at higher magnifications. Celestron's instruction manual correctly recommends that most viewing be done in the range of 40x to 130x. So what about that 675x magnification proclaimed on the box? I'd say it's not worth the trouble.

Overall, the Celestron Powerseeker 114 is a budget priced telescope with good optical performance, especially when using the low power K20 eyepiece. If you're willing to spend a little more money, either Orion's SkyQuest XT4.5 or Celestron's Firstscope 114EQ will give you a sturdier mount, an improved finder scope, and better eyepieces. Also, for about the price of the Powerseeker 114, I like the dependable refractor design of Celestron's Firstscope 70EQ. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Low cost
  • Good optics
  • Serviceable K20 eyepiece
Cons:
  • Wobbly mount
  • Difficult to collimate
  • Plastic finder and focuser

B000MLL6R8 Celestron’s AstroMaster 114 EQ reflector telescope offers more than three times the light gathering power of 60mm beginner scopes in a system that is compact yet powerful. The package includes a new version of Celestron’s CG-2 equatorial mount with a rugged steel tripod. Two eyepieces are included, the 20mm eyepiece is an erect-image design with 50x magnification and the 10mm eyepiece produces 100x magnification. The AstroMaster 114 EQ also features a built-in red dot finder, fully illustrated instructions, and easy no-tool setup. The package even provides a student version of “The Sky” astronomy software to help you find stars and planets.

The AstroMaster 114 is a modified Newtonian design. Using a short focal length primary mirror and built in corrector lens, the AstroMaster 114 has an effective focal length of 40 inches (1000mm) in a tube only 18 inches long. Both eyepieces provide images that are pleasingly sharp. The 20mm eyepiece (50x magnification) nicely frames the Moon, and daylight images are sharp with plenty of contrast. The 10mm eyepiece (100x magnification) does a nice job zooming in on lunar craters or on the planets. With the 10mm eyepiece or with my own 6mm eyepiece (166x) I can clearly focus in on Saturn’s rings and pick up details like the shadow cast by the rings on the planet.

I also like the solid design of Celestron’s new CG-2 equatorial mount. With the help of Celestron’s fully illustrated quick set-up guide it took only a few minutes to assemble the equatorial mount and clamp the optical tube in place. The whole telescope is compact enough to carry outside in one trip. Aligning the telescope is a simple matter of pointing the equatorial axis at Polaris, the North Star. Then I can track the motion of stars and planets by simply turning one slow motion knob. The AstroMaster 114 EQ seems quite stable on its CG-2 mount, a little wobble while focusing damps out quickly as soon as I let go of the focus knob.

With good optics, a solid mount, two eyepieces, and fully illustrated instructions, the AstroMaster 114 EQ reflector telescope is a very good introductory telescope. The one feature that is not so easy to use is the built in star pointer, which is best suited only for finding bright objects like the Moon and planets. I can overcome the narrow field of view somewhat by using an optional 32mm plossl eyepiece while looking for deep space objects because its wider field of view makes stars and planets easier to locate. --Jeff Phillips

    • Computerized hand control with 4,000-object database

    • Motorized Altazimuth mount
    • Focal ratio: f5
    • Focal length: 650mm

Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Series Newtonian Reflector Telescope - 31145Amazon.com Celestron’s computerized NexStar 130 SLT adds affordable "Go-To" technology to a compact Newtonian reflector telescope. By using mirrors instead of lenses, the Newtonian optics of the NexStar 130 SLT produce an image nearly five times brighter than the NexStar 60 SLT refractor telescope. The package includes everything except the batteries, and features easy no-tool setup, two good eyepieces, and even includes a student version of "The Sky" planetarium software.

The Newtonian design of the NexStar 130 SLT is optimized to produce bright images over a wide field of view. When I use an optional 32mm Plossl eyepiece, the famous Double Cluster in Perseus looks like a display of celestial fireworks with streamers of stars trailing across the 2 degree field of view. The standard equipment 25mm eyepiece magnifies the image about 26 times, with a wide field of view just right for viewing deep space objects like star clusters or the Orion Nebula.

    Celestron NexStar 130
The included 9mm eyepiece (72x magnification) offers great views of the Lunar disk and globular star clusters like M13. And when I add a 2x Barlow lens to the 9mm eyepiece for a total magnification of 144x, I can easily see cloud bands on the planet Jupiter and pick up detail in Saturn’s rings.

The NexStar 130 SLT also features Celestron’s patented SkyAlign technology. With SkyAlign I don't need a star chart or a compass to align the telescope, I just enter the date and time then point the telescope at three bright stars. SkyAlign tells me the star names, and allows the telescope to find over 4,000 stars, planets, and galaxies by just pushing a button. The accurate tracking makes it easy to get high power views of the planets, and allowed me to take some great pictures using a Celestron NexImage webcam. I also like the "Two-Star align" and "Solar System align" modes because I can often get the NexStar system up and running while older scopes are still waiting for their alignment stars to appear in he twilight.

Reflector telescopes offer more light gathering power per dollar than any other design, but that value is balanced by the fact that the mirrors may need to be aligned or "collimated" occasionally. Using Celestron’s Collimation Eyepiece

    Celestron NexStar 130
I had no trouble fine tuning the optical alignment, and I was rewarded with sharp views of Lunar craters even when I pushed the magnification up to the theoretical limit of 300x. The other drawback of a computerized telescope, of course, is battery consumption. An optional PowerTank battery is a handy way to power the NexStar 130 SLT, and I like to keep the tripod legs short and observe while seated because this gives me a solid and comfortable view. --Jeff Phillips

    Pros:

    • Wide field views
    • Computerized go-to tracking
    • Light and portable
    Cons:
    • Short battery life
    • Sensitive to vibration

    Suggested Options:

    • Celestron Accessory Kit
    • Celestron PowerTank battery
    • Celestron Collimation Eyepiece
