what is the best camera that isnt a dslr for a photographer?

Question by Elias W: what is the best camera that isnt a dslr for a photographer?
I understand that a dslr camera is highly suggested, but i dont plan to pay that much money (no more than $ 300) for one of those kind of cameras just yet.Would the samsung nv20 be a good choice of a camera?

The Samsung NV20 is a fine P&S camera and you should enjoy it as you play with your friends and family, however by definition, a photographer uses adjustable cameras for complete control of the resulting images.

Buying a fully automatic P&S camera, decidedly places you into a camera "user" category, rather than as a photographer.

That said, much creativity can come from a P&S camera, but eventually the frustration of missed shots due to design restrictions, shutter lag, being stuck with one lens, the tiny sensor and red-eye issues will eventually cause you to move toward an entry level DSLR and a passion for learning how to control such a camera.

Get the cheapest dSLR from Canon, Nikon or Pentax and take very good care of it. It will be your ultimate toy that will be your primary tool when you get more serious.

What is a good camera for an amateur photographer?

Question by : What is a good camera for an amateur photographer?
Every year for Christmas I ask for a camera. Every year, I've gotten an old hand-me-down digital camera. I've always hated the way the pictures look.

I am completely clueless on what kind of camera to buy. I know I want something that will take a higher quality photo, I've been looking into the Canon 400D SLR.

I'm looking for something in the 400-500 dollar range.

Can someone please suggest a good semi-professional camera for someone who is tired of cheap recycled digital cameras? :)

Thank you!

Try the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi or the Nikon D3100. Great entry-level DSLRs. You should start off with a tripod and a good wide-angle or zoom lens.

Stick to SLR cameras ONLY. No pro shooter uses a point and shoot. You need total control of your camera.

An intermediate range camera is all you need. You won't spend more than say 500-800 bones. Sadly, digital cameras aren't cheap compared to film but oh well. Those days are gone. What you need to spend good money on is the lens. NEVER BUY CHEAP LENSES! PERIOD!!! You can have the best camera in the world but if your lens is crap, every image will be crap.

You need to learn how to manipulate aperture, shutter speed, ISO, water balance, image temp, etc... Either find a good book on it, a photographer that can teach you, or take classes.
