How to shoot a starry sky with a Canon PowerShot SD790 camera?

Question by Mini Mi: How to shoot a starry sky with a Canon PowerShot SD790 camera?
Everytime I try, nothing shows up on the camera screen!! I don't know if I have a nighttime setting for my camera, either... Any tips? Suggestions? Thanks!

Compact cameras are not capable of time exposure and that's what you're after, like this.

To do this I had to have the shutter open for 8 seconds. Only a bridge camera or an SLR can give you that control.

Some do, but you will have to do the research.

My old Nikon Coolpix 990 had an optional remote control. Others do too, but you will have to drill down into the various camera descriptions and look under the accessories list of each camera

Pretty much anything Kodak or Canon will work. Go to CircuitCity.com, they're the best. This link will send you to the Poin-and-shoot, 8-9 Megapixels, and movie mode cameras.

Actually there isn't such a thing. The closest you can come is what some folks are calling a bridge camera. What that means I'm not sure but these devices are the size and weight of an SLR without actually being an SLR. They have every control of an SLR accept manual focus.

I have an older model of this type, a Fuji 9000. Fuji has a pretty good line of these cameras.
Understand most aren't cheap but they work very well.
