It is very hard to digitally reproduce realistic natural colours, lighting conditions and so on, so don't expect too much.
Canon make a fine range of digital cameras, but your best bet is to go along to your local camera shop and try some out.

Kodak V1003 is awesome! its about $ 200 and then a sim card is about $ 20-$ 40! It has different effects sepia, black & white...etc. Ans it has 8mp Its very easy to control. The buttons are very nice and the quality of the pictures is great!

Without a motor drive to follow the proper motion of the stars you won't get much more than streaks for the stars (star trails). Even so, you may have to push up the sensitivity of the CCD which will mean more noise. You can shoot the moon but you'll get a small image that you'll have to edit to a larger size. By the way, I think you mean astronomical and not astrological stuff.

All Pentax DSLRs can use any pentax lens EVER made.
Also the IS thing the guy below mentioned. However, keep in mind that old Pentax lenses were made for 35mm SLRs, the equivalent to full frame cameras today. Pentax doesn't have full frame cameras yet, so images'll be cropped.

I have a Nikon D500 which I am absolutely in love with. I don't have any bad feedback about it and neither did ANY of the reviews that I read. It is also very decently priced, I got it for about $ 750 with the body, a case, and two lenses. I would DEFINITELY recommend this camera it's just amazing. With some cameras you really have to try to get a great picture, with the Nikon D5000, it just does the work for you.

It really depends on two things 1) where you sit, and 2) is it dark in the location.
However, basically all cameras will be good. You'll just need to set some settings such as speed and flash/lighting. If you have a zoom lens, and you sit way back - use that.

The Samsung NV20 is a fine P&S camera and you should enjoy it as you play with your friends and family, however by definition, a photographer uses adjustable cameras for complete control of the resulting images.
Buying a fully automatic P&S camera, decidedly places you into a camera "user" category, rather than as a photographer.
That said, much creativity can come from a P&S camera, but eventually the frustration of missed shots due to design restrictions, shutter lag, being stuck with one lens, the tiny sensor and red-eye issues will eventually cause you to move toward an entry level DSLR and a passion for learning how to control such a camera.

I have an Olympus FE-320 and it works beautifully. Its super light, really small & takes great pictures. I'd say its much more affordable compared to the Kodak's and Nikkon's.

You should have software that comes with the camera that will not only allow you to put the pictures on the computer, but will allow you to make them better... enhance, crop, get rid of "red eye", etc.

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......
The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.

It would be best to talk to your college tutor. Some require bridge cameras, some require DSLR's and if you are doing film photography, you may need a 35mm film SLR.

Well, digital cameras have been put to both good and bad uses. Contractors use them to say survey a work site and the images are so clear even when enlarged. Makes it easy to show perhaps a job well done.

But then you have the voyeurs. Same deal. Crystal clear images of some girl taking a shower or something. I can't really say that's a cultural 'development'. More of a negative. But still, it's an effect of usage of digital cameras.

The only thing I can think of that may be the problem is that your hand is shaking while you're taking the photos or your subject is moving, in which case the photo will turn out blurry no matter what unless you have some sort of professional camera. If it's your hand shaking then maybe try using an tripod.

If you don't have the skills, you could be using a $ 30,000 Hasselblad and still take pictures that are not as good as an experienced photographer with a $ 500 point-and-shoot.

Well first ask yourself, what kind of photography will you be doing? Sports and actions pro's like Canon, while nature and landscape pro's lean more toward Nikon.
I own Nikon and the biggest reason I chose Nikon was for the lenses. You can use any (most) nikon len on any (most) nikon camera. In fact Nikon is the only camera that does that. And the lens are backwards compatiable.

Sounds like you have a digital camera. Some digital cameras are just slow. I have a CP-8800 that is like molasses in winter, real slow. So really, you can't speed up the time it takes a digital camera to get ready between shots. Sorry.

When you say basic digital camera I am assuming its a point and shoot.
a point and shoot does a pre-flash either to reduce red eye or to meter ( for automatic settings)
to use an external flash you need to set the camera's flash in manual mode such that it fires only once
and set the external flash to optical slave mode so that it sees a flash go and fires at the same time.
most DSLR's have a sync speed of 1/250 i.e. shutter speed has to be slower than 1/250th of a second
however the point and shoot camera's have a leaf shutter and are able to sync faster than that.
what you need to do is find that manual flash mode

All AF-S lenses will work with any of the newer (made in the past 25 years) Nikon 35 mm SLR' cameras.
If you happen to have any DX lenses, you will get vignetting when you use them on your 35 mm camera, but any of the DX lenses will work perfectly fine on either your D60 or any of the Nikon "N" series cameras like the N65, N70, etc and any camera from the F4 up.
Good results are going to be based upon your skills as a photographer since both the 35 mm and DSLR camera bodies will perform equally as well in the hands of a competent photographer

4 megapixels is plenty. The human eye can't tell the difference unless you either plan to:
1) print huge, poster-sized copies of the photos, or
2) zoom way, way in using software.
In fact the more megapixels you get, not only does the price of the camera go up, but fewer pictures fit on your memory card.
4 megapixels is more than enough for 95% of us.
