What are the good qualities in a digital camera?

Question by survul: What are the good qualities in a digital camera?
I know next to nothing about photography or cameras. What makes one camera better than another? A description of camera specs and qualities would be really appreciated.

you probably would want a smaller lighter camera just because its easyer to have with you...it should have good zoom, mine has 5x optical zoom and its plenty.less than three megapixels isn't worth it,id say at lest 5.it be good to have different properties for different settings such as candle light, close up,and things in motion. i fine that Kodak and Sony are good brans

  1. As you probably know, you are asking a question that photographers spend years learning the answers to... kind of tough to tell you all that in a few words.

But to just cover some basics. As concerns digital cameras, the general public is brainwashed by the manufacturers into thinking of the megapixel, (MP), number as the holy grail of judging a camera's qualities and abilities. A consumer sees a point and shoot camera with 10 MP and thinks it is better than a SLR type of camera with 6 or 8 MP. It all comes down to sensor size. The SLR camera has a MUCH larger digital capture sensor than the point and shoot, and in turn has larger photosites, (pixels). The larger the individual size of the pixel, the better quality the photo, especially at higher ISO. Also, even the cheapest kit lens on a DSLR is vastly better than the tiny lens on a point and shoot. Plus the SLR gives you total control of shooting parameters that most point and shoot cameras do not.

So don't be conned by big MP numbers, there is MUCH more to a digital camera than that.

But in reality, a GOOD photographer can get much better shots with a point and shoot camera that he / she REALLY knows how to use, as compared to someone with an expensive SLR that has never so much as bothered to read the manual and just put it in AUTO and expects it to work miracles. Too many people think the CAMERA will magically make great photos, and never even consider that it is THEMSELVES that are just a much a part of quality photography, if not THE most important part.

My advice to you is to take a good course in photography at a local college, or join a camera club, read books, or take on line courses. Once you have some understanding of photography, you will know the answers to your question yourself and be able to make a knowledgeable buying decision.

  2. Most people choose their camera based on the amount of mega pixels. Unless you plan on getting poster size prints you don't need one with 8 or 10 mega-pixels. Also zoom is important for those long shots. Forget about digital zoom, that is completely worthless just look for something with a good optical zoom. Also some people prefer the SLR cameras because you can change the lenses, they have bigger sensors (to name a few of the advantages). Of course these are more pricey than the compacts.

    Hope this helps some.
