What are some great cameras that are a mix between a point & shoot camera, and a SLR camera?

Actually there isn't such a thing. The closest you can come is what some folks are calling a bridge camera. What that means I'm not sure but these devices are the size and weight of an SLR without actually being an SLR. They have every control of an SLR accept manual focus.

I have an older model of this type, a Fuji 9000. Fuji has a pretty good line of these cameras.
Understand most aren't cheap but they work very well.

Wait for it, you're gonna get a lot of s*** about that professional comment. But Anyhow there are what are the Hybrid cameras out now. Olympus pen series, Panasonic GH and I think Sony has one now. They are built for the point and shoot crowd with the abilities (and that's the key word) of an SLR. lenses and manual ring are some of the mentionable things.

Now here's my contribution to the aforementioned s***, No camera makes professional quality pictures. You can take some control with these but they are not magic.

  2. What you are referring to are called bridge cameras. They are basically point-and-shoot cameras shaped like miniature dSLRs. They do have some sort of controls like dSLRs but the sensor size is way much smaller and the lens can not be interchanged.

Picture quality however is dependent on the photographer. The camera is just a tool.

  3. There are now camera out that are more compact but have bigger sensors to help provide higher quality images. There also cameras that are just recently announced and will be shipping soon. Many of these cameras will look like a DSLR but are smaller since there is no internal mirror.

Here are the brands and models that you may want to check out:

    Brands----------------Models

    Panasonic: GF1, GH1, G1, G2, and G10

    Olympus: E-P1, E-P2, and E-PL1

    Sony: NEX-3, and NEX-5

Below, I provided some website links to help you research your camera choice.

    Hope this helps.
