An infra red camera uses infra red waves. An optical camera uses light waves.

In astronomy both cameras are used to explore galaxies and the space. The advantage of using an infrared camera is that the IR camera can see through dusts and gases. So astronomers can get a clear picture of those galaxies and space. But dusts can penetrate optical waves.

IR camera is used in finding people in a smoked place like fire situation.

  1. In addition to the above, some cameras can see both infra red AND optical.
Try this: Look at a TV remote control output and press the buttons on it. You can't see anything. Now try again but look at it through the camera on your mobile phone - you can see its infra red flashing.

  2. Visible light, infra red, ultra vi olot ,X rays all are part of electromagnetic spectrum. Our eyes are sensitive to only visible light.
For example you can see a broken bone in an X ray image but you can not see directly with your eye.
Infra red camera photographs with objects with temperature difference. For example, if a military tank is hiding inside forest, you ca not see it or photograph with an ordinary camera.
But Tank will be visible in an infra red picture.
