  4. Most compact digital cameras give good clear results these days so it really wouldnt matter which one. There are exceptions though - for example some Kodak's a quite poor as are some of the lower end Fuji's. Sony, believe it or not, is one of the worst brands. Maybe someone should ask the question and I'll explain why ;)
Anyway, as far as picture quality is concerned, buy a camera with the standard CCD, not that fancy Super CCD that Fuji brag about with the honeycomb pattern pixel arrangement (which Sony are starting to use in their videocameras by the way). Again, ask the question and I'll explain why. The best compact cameras as far as picture quality are concerned at Nikon Coolpix and Canon Powershot cameras. There are some good Casios released though.

Anyway, hope that helps. If you want to spend the money, you could always go for a Nikon D2X or Canon 1Ds mark II and buy a range of prime lenses. HAHA! In house joke that only a photographer would get.

  5. A good entry level DSLR is the Nikon D50 with the kit lens.

Another good camera is the slightly older Nikon D70 or the D70s; there's also the new and much praised and raved about Nikon D80, which is a little pricey right now. The best lens is the Nikkor AF DX 18-135mm lens... it's a fantastic lens!

The next camera on the line-up is the pro-level D200 (and several others far too expensive right now). I'm not even tempted because of the price (nah... I'll stick with film technolgy as long as I can).

Try checking with B & H in NYC (www.bhphotovideo.com). Good luck and best wishes.

  6. DB,

Forget digital point and shoots. They are the 110 cameras of our time.

Check out the 5D or the D2Xs. They are reasonable digital cameras. However, even at that price point they do not compare to a film Contax, Leica, Mamiya, or Hasselblad camera.

Get real. Shoot with metal, glass, and silver.
