Well, I would recommend a Nikon if you're serious about photography, meaning if you're looking for a career in photography or if it's in your budget.
Nikon D40's are the cheapest Nikon DSLR's they make, and they're relatively easy to use.
If you want a digital camera I would go for a cannon, those are very good digital cameras.

I hope this has helped you.

  1. If you are a beginner then I recommend a night class and a Pentax Spotmatic or Mamiya C220. A great way to learn the basics.

    Spotmatic with 55mm -- $ 40 to $ 90

    Mamiya C220 with 80mm --- $ 125 to $ 300

  2. I just love that. 'Only Nikon if you're serious about photography!'

I would be interested to know what the professionals who shoot hasselblad, mamiya, leica, canon, olympus, pentax, sony etc. have to say about that. Sorry guys, I guess you just aren't serious.

My best piece of advice would be to ignore people like that who haven't bothered to do their own research and bought what they were told to by the last moron. There are plenty of reasons why you could choose one brand over another and they are different from person to person. Different brands are suited to different people.

If you want something cheap but good, I say go for something used. And unless you want to be limited by what lenses you can actually use with your camera and have autofocus capabilities, avoid the Nikon d40, d60 and d5000. Lenses without internal focus motors will not autofocus on them and that means you can't take advantage of a lot of great deals on lenses you find on ebay or craigslist.

You can get a good used camera through craigslist or ebay and B&H and Adorama sell used equipment too. If you are careful, you can get a great deal.

Check out dpreview.com to see digital camera reviews and to compare camera models in the buying guide. You will know you made the right choice when you have made it for yourself rather than having someone else choose for you.

A manually adjustable 35mm or 120 film camera. Any Nikon or Canon or the Pentax K1000. Also the Yashicamat 124 and the Mamiya C220.
