personally, i think film cameras are better low light cameras in some ways. simple 1950's medium format cameras like the voigtlander perkeo can produce nearly grain-free images at 3200 and 6400 iso. this camera is extremely light weight and doesn't require batteries/charging but could require a light meter if you are not comfortable with shooting without one. the camera is cheap but the film can be expensive to process if you shoot colour and don't process your own b&w. b&w can be very cheap though. in either case, you will be able to make images of higher resolution than multi thousand dollar dslr's and i think these kind of cameras are more satisfying to use. they are also more rugged and reliable in harsh conditions yet cheap enough that you won't kill yourself if anything happens to it.

  1. For what you want I recommend a Pentax k-x. It's nice and lightweight and uses batteries, so you can carry extras with you. I'm not sure about the low lighting.

  2. Actually low light shooting can be very tricky if you don't know what you're doing. First it's not a camera issue - it's all in the lens and no compact will do it.

Second any camera, regardless of make, is going to leave the shutter open longer than normal in low light so any movement of camera or subject = blur... any movement at all. Here's a shot I did recently but keep in mind the camera was on a tripod and the shutter was open for 4 seconds. Also I had to use my self timer because even the movement of me pressing the shutter release will cause blur.

So many people don't understand the problems associated with low light shooting. It takes time to learn with any camera. No compact will do the photo above only a bridge camera or a dslr. I shot the above with my eos t1i by Canon.
