What is the best camera (or camera brand) for aspiring photographers?

Question by chris: What is the best camera (or camera brand) for aspiring photographers?
What is the best camera (or camera brand) for aspiring photographers?
I want to buy a good camera with good photo quality, because I want to try some amateur photography (hopefully progress to professional after I'm done with college), so I need to know the best camera to start out on. I also want to know which is better Canon or Nikon? If anyone can help, please do! And any info on photography would be great!

I recommend you start off with a semi-professional digital SLR. It will probably cost you around 400 - 700 dollars depending on the brand and/or features.
Something like:

or

if you're willing to go a bit pricier.
A major difference in those two, is that the 2nd one (EOS Digital Rebel T1i) has 15 mega-pixels, as opposed to the 1st one (EOS Digital Rebel XS) which has 10.1 mega-pixels.
You can check out the rest of the features :)

Nikon and Canons don't have too much of a difference, when one comes out with a new product/feature, the other soon comes to compete. Nikon though, is an older company, but Canon has also come to the same in recent years.

Personally, I prefer Nikons, just because they appear to have a different ambiance when taking the picture that I like.
If you notice, they have right about the same kinds of features as the Canon (and price!):

Good luck and happy photoing! :)

  1. Its the one that you pick up and it feels like a part of your body. My first was a Pentax. Then a Leica M3-stolen so moved on to Olympus. Then wanted the best so went to Nikon-but small negative so opted for Hasselblad and made money with it. Wanted back into 35mm so chose Canon because it felt right and was quieter than Nikon. Lucky because first affordable digital was 10D. Now have 10,20,30 and 40 D as well as 5D and 5DMrkll(best camera I've ever shot with) although Mrk4 is absolutely a money-maker for action work but too expensive (try 7D). Canon is great with Sigma lens(7 yr warranty and tack sharp-esp 120-300f2.8) Canon service basically says go screw after 1 year. Still have my Hassy stuff which I will always be in love with-just waiting for an affordable digital back! Good luck, Ian

  2. Your best bet would be to start with a Nikon D300 or a Canon 7D. Either camera is good. I prefer Nikon because you can ue the older manual focus lenses, which are a lot cheaper than the newer autofocus lenses. I paid around 3500.00 for a 600mm F4 manual focus, rather than 7,000.00 for the autofocus version both used prices).

    here's a shot with the 600mm F4:
