What is a good camera for a beginner?

Question by [♥] à la Hockey: What is a good camera for a beginner?
I am thirteen and really want a professional camera. What is a good camera to start with? Possibly under $ 300? $ 400, if that's not possible. Thanks and hope that you can help!
Digital, is what I am looking for.

Digital or Film?

You don't specify.

$ 400 will not buy a "Pro" dSLR but it will buy a very good Pro fSLR like the Nikon F5 or F3HP.

Keep in mind that film cameras are "digital" as well. Just about all of my roll-film frames end up as a hi-res file. I can get 17 to 21mp out of 35mm.

Addendum:

I personally do not advise starting with digital. However, for your money you should look into a gently used Nikon D50 and 50mm F/1.8

  1. If you really want to learn photography, I'd get a DSLR. Canon Rebel XT and Nikon D40 are both really good starter cameras. They can usually be found used for under $ 400. Then read your manual. At least twice. Go to the library or bookstore and read everything you can about photography.

  4. Try a Canon PowerShot A590

    Here's a picture of one

They are super easy to get the hang of using and the quality of your photos will be great...could be better on the megapixels but it's honestly a good camera. I'm very happy with mine. And it costs $ 150-$ 200 can't remember the exact price, but it's in that range.
