Stick to SLR cameras ONLY. No pro shooter uses a point and shoot. You need total control of your camera.

An intermediate range camera is all you need. You won't spend more than say 500-800 bones. Sadly, digital cameras aren't cheap compared to film but oh well. Those days are gone. What you need to spend good money on is the lens. NEVER BUY CHEAP LENSES! PERIOD!!! You can have the best camera in the world but if your lens is crap, every image will be crap.

You need to learn how to manipulate aperture, shutter speed, ISO, water balance, image temp, etc... Either find a good book on it, a photographer that can teach you, or take classes.

  1. An entry level DSLR can make quality professional images. A lot depends on your progressing skill at usng the light and processing. As you get better so will your framing and composition. If you wanted to carry on with this field you can always upgrade later. I started with a bridge camera then progressed to EOS 450D THEN 5D MARKII. I upgraded due to ISO limitations on the former model.

  2. Any camera that is fully adjustable will work for learning the craft of photography. You can worry about "what the pros use" when you are actually working.

So any dSLR or compact that can change lenses, they are called ILC or EVIL cameras like a Sony NEX F3, Panasonic GF5, or olympus micro four thirds.

There are free photographer tutorials all over the web, you'd be surprised at how much information photographers are willing to share with the world.

  4. Yes, DSLR cameras will create the highest quality, sharpest images and will give you the most control over the images you take, so that's the route to take to get your technical skills up to the right level - but far more important is getting out of your head any idea that a particular camera will make you a "professional" photographer. No camera can do that!

Great photographers will produce superb images from ANY camera. It is about the eye and mind of the photographer, not the camera.
