What is the best camera for photography?

Question by Danielle: What is the best camera for photography?
I'm starting college for photography and they do not supply you with a camera just the equipment like flash drives, messenger bag, blower brush and things like that. I wanted to know what camera would be the best to get please help!

It would be best to talk to your college tutor. Some require bridge cameras, some require DSLR's and if you are doing film photography, you may need a 35mm film SLR.

  1. I think the D3200 makes a great entry level camera. Get BLACK it matches all the lenses and the resale of the red will be far worse.

I'm a Nikon shooter, so my recommendations are going to be Nikon models. I primarily shoot low light concert photography. I shoot a Nikon D7000 and I love it so much I don't care that they just came out with the D7100.

I was introduced to modern DSLR photography by my son who was shooting a Nikon D3000 at the time. I was REALLY impressed with the shots he was getting, and all from teaching himself by reading tutorials online. He was using about a $ 750 setup that he had found for $ 500 with kit lens online, and I was floored. He still shoots quite a bit on that old D3000: http://www.flickr.com/photos/atk195/sets…

Again, I think the D3200 makes a great entry level camera. After that I would step to the D7100 if you get serious. You will have more control of the RAW files before you develop them to an image due to the full 24-bit uncompressed RAW format and a killer image sensor. Then up to the Full Frame camera bodies after/if you ever start earning money at photography.

  2. Canon and Nikon are the most used cameras in professional photography today, and because you are going to school, I am assuming you want to be a professional photographer. Canon has a reputation for being a more intuitive camera while Nikon is reputable for its lenses. If you are pursuing a specific genre of photography, you want to consider features of the camera.

I use Nikon's D700 full frame format camera. It works well in low light and the full frame format is ideal for city skylines and landscapes. I have always used Nikon and would never use any other brand of camera. In the spirit of honesty, those who use canon cameras tend to stick with canon so its kind of a loyalty thing in my opinion.

Compare both brands and consider the features that would best suit your needs. If you want to do sports and action photography, look for the camera with the faster shutter speed and frames per second capability. If you plan on doing a lot of night time and low light photography, consider the cameras ISO capability when making a choice. If commercial photography is your thing, resolution is going to be of particular importance.

Go to the Nikon and Canon websites to view their models and read the reviews of current owners of those models. People writing reviews are usually very candid and will give an honest critique of their camera experience. Many users will also include samples of pictures they took with that specific model so you can see for yourself the type of picture that camera can take. If you find picture samples that appeal to you and fits the genre you would prefer to shoot, lets those factors help you in determining your camera choice.

Once you have narrowed down your choice, most camera dealers have rental options that allow you to try before you buy. There are camera bodies out there that cost in the thousands, so try a few out before making a commitment. Good luck in your search.
