  2. Like Antoni said, any film or digital SLR will work. As will any digital point and shoot camera, but with the SLR, you get much more quality, features, build, and possibilities.

Most people nowadays shoot with the DSLR camera. For weather photography, you'll be out in the rain, dust, lightning, and well, weather. The best camera(s) for this are going to be more expensive.

    A few examples are:

    Nikon D200 or D300; basically $ 2,000.
    Nikon D2xs or Nikon D3; $ 5,000.
    Canon EOS 5D or anything from the 1D series. $ 3,000-$ 8,000
    Olympus E3-I think; around $ 2,000.
    Pentax K10d; $ 1,000.

Out of all of them, the cheapest is the Pentax 10d. It is an excellent camera, and is only a thousand dollars.

My top choice would be either the Nikon D3 or Canon 5D. Both are excellent camera, but the D3 has a higher burst speed, and the capability to use 2 CF cards, meaning a huge capacity. I would also expect the images to come out the same, but more so with the new Nikon sensor. Either way, both are excellent cameras.

The Nikon D200 and D300 are both excellent cameras as well, but if you are going to get one, go with the new D300. It has a better sensor and burst speed.

The Olympus E3 is a good camera as well, but its lenses are few and far between. And those that you can find are very expensive. Dont get me wrong, they are suppose to be very good. But, there is no real future in the way of professinal photography since it does not have anything more to offer, except for its flip out LCD. In professional use, I'd expect that thing not to las long.

The Canon 1D series are phenominal cameras, but they are just too expensive. The 5D is really enough.

That's about it for the cameras. You'll also need a good lens, also one that will hold up just like the camera itself. For lightning, get the best wide angle lens you can find. A good range would be a 50mm 1.4, a 12-24mm 2.8, and 17-55mm f4.

You'll also need an excellent tripod and remote. For the tripod, look into a Manfrotto or Bogen.

As you noticed, all this top of the line gear is very expensive. A cheaper way would be to get an entry level DSLR and a rain guard. A rain guard costs around $ 40. Entry level DSLRs are now down to around $ 600. Granted, these will not have the protection, range, or superb image quality, so be careful how you use them. Especially in the rain and bad weather.

One thing to remember when shooting lightning strikes, You'll be using a very fast shutter speed, otherwise everything will be overexposed. To combat this, meter the surroundings, and take a picture. Then, without moving the camera, take another picture of the lightning. Then combine the two images in a simple program, such as Adobe Photoshop 5 or 6.

So in short, the better the sensor, the cleaner your images will be. But, you can get by with a cheap camera and a rain guard. A good wide angle lens is needed. You'll also need a tripod and remote. A post processing program will help a lot, so you might want to look into it.

    Hope this helped.
