Look for a "bridge camera" with a focal lenth of 24-150 give or take. You want an optical zoom and disregard digital zoom. Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Canon make very good quality equipment. Also, don't worry about mega-pixels. All you need is about 6 or so for the vast majority of the photos you take, unless you are making a 20"x30" print.

In my opinion, the best camera to start with is the Nikon COOLPIX P100. It is very user-friendly and the 26x zoom is incredible! I got mine new from Best Buy for $ 400, but if you don't mind getting a used one you can get one cheaper.

  2. If you have the money to spend, the best one to get is a Canon Rebel for $ 500 dollars. It's good for beginners or experts. You can keep it for a long time, and put pretty much any kind of lens on it.
You can get expensive lenses later on when you get more of an eye for it and still put them on it.
It's the camera i use, and i'm in love with it.
