i want to get a camera just for like taking regular pictures but with good quality. what kind of camera should i get.

Good visual quality is sometimes relative to each person. The real factor is price; how much you want to spend. Best advice is to check out camera reviews such as anandtech Cnet. Personally I have had great experience with cannon for low-end point and shoot.

Pretty much any camera can take regular pictures, and image quality is based on the photographer, mostly.

why i pick this? well 2 months ago i was looking a good normal camera for a friend of mine. and I picked this.
I took some test shot with it and it came out amazing plus i really like the HD video record on it!
the quality of the HD video is just amazing from a small slim camera like this.
If you willing to pay a little bit more then the Canon SD940 IS is for you, it is basically a newer version of the SD780 IS
however you should take a look at the Canon G11. The G11 is a point and shoot camera that get close enough to the D-SLR camera quality. and it also has many functions like a D-SLR camera, you can upgrade a few lenses too like a wide angle fish eyes lens. or put a bigger flash on top of it. so it is basically a point and shoot body camera looks but with couple extra function like a D-SLR camera. (the only draw back is the G11 doesn't have HD video mode!) that's the only thing that stop me from getting it.
For me, I'm part time photographer with a Canon 50D, it is a D-SLR. and I'm thinking to get a good small camera for traveling or party. so I'm still waiting Canon to make a better one. if the G11 has HD 1080 video mode I will get it now. even the SD940 has HD mode but it is not 1080HD. it is 780HD but it is a lot better than the camcorder that i bought 3 years ago for $ 500.
so you pick the choice at the end.

SD940 IS is around $ 250
G11 is around $ 450
