Why does a digital camera have a button cell battery?

Question by stressed: Why does a digital camera have a button cell battery?
What uses the button cell battery in a digital camera? I took it out and the camera still seemed to operate.

The coin battery powers the cameras internal memory. When you take out the main battery the camera doesn't forget the time or date etc, this is because of the internal memory.

You'll probably find that although the camera will work without the internal battery the time and date needs constantly reset. Also if you have adjusted things like picture settings or custom functions the camera will probably have defaulted back to the factory settings.

The coin battery will last for around 3 years before needing replaced. Cheap as chips though.
