I think a lot of that is just psychological, but it could also be due a wide lens.

  2. Depending on the lens, the camera position, the lighting and how the camera is used, a camera can add *the appearance* of ten more pounds to a person. It doesn't actually add any more weight (unless you happen to be carrying the camera).

Flattering camera shots are usually with the camera positioned from around waist height to chest height, rather than at eye level. This makes people legs look longer and is a very flattering look. You can try it yourself with a video or still camera and you'll see that a camera at waist height gives a much better look than at eye level.

Next, there's the lens choice. A telephoto lens is usually more flattering, as it doesn't have the distortions of a wide angle lens. With a wide angle lens, the closer the person is, the more likely the person will be "stretched" or distorted by the wide angle lens.

Finally, there's lighting choices. Good lighting can be very flattering; poor lighting can really make a person look bad. Watch TV sometime and notice that the lighting deliberately tries to create a shadow under the chin, to hide any double chins or neck wrinkles, for example. Poor lighting, such as from straight on flash, can really bring out a person's flaws and help to make them look heavier than they really are.
