How many mega pixels is standard for a general camera?

Question by Fortune Cookie: How many mega pixels is standard for a general camera?
I am looking for a new camera and i am considering the Nikon Coolpix S400, which is a 12 megapixel camera. I need my camera to be quality and take really good pictures but I do not need a professional camera. It also had a 4x zoom so does that factor in at all?

  1. Actually the optical zoom range is much more important than the pixel count on such a camera.

Since you cannot change lenses on a P&S camera, it is important that you buy one with a zoom range that will cover the subjects you tend to shoot.

Here is a link to the "super zoom" cameras which you may want to consider.

  2. The average camera has around 10 megapixels, but honestly the lens makes all of the difference first of all. If the camera has a lot of megapixels but a crappy lens, you will get a lot of grain and odd pixels on your pictures, especially for fine details or zoomed in.

Get a camera with maybe slightly less megapixels and a top quality lens then you'll see a big improvement already.

Carl Zeiss and DC Leica lens are the best lens for a compact camera on the market, the Nikon one (Nikkor) is OK but far from outstanding. Samsung lens is best avoided.

Get a camera with a good optical zoom as well. 4x is average, 6x is good but 12x will be fantastic for close up shots. A camera with a large optical zoom are a lot more expensive than cameras without a large zoom but trust me, its well worth the extra.

These are my compact camera picks:

Panasonic Lumix TZ8 - 12.1mp, DC Leica Lens, 12x Optical Zoom, 640x480 movie recording, SDXC
Panasonic Lumix TZ10 - 12.1mp, DC Leica Lens, 12x Optical Zoom, 720p movie recording, SDXC
Sony Cybershot DSCHX5VN - 10mp, Sony G lens, 10x Optical Zoom, 1080p movie recording, Pro Duo Mark 2
